Nexus and the Tyne and Wear Metro

This is a chance to showcase our organisation and give our staff the chance to show youngsters the many engineering functions that are required every day to maintain the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Nexus is the public body which owns and runs the Tyne and Wear Metro, one of Britain’s busiest rail networks, as well as providing other local transport services.  We employ about 1,000 people, about half of them in engineering roles from looking after our technology, tracks and trains to leading multi-million pound projects building the transport networks of the future.  We employ apprentices and graduates – and some of our brightest and most senior people started with us aged 16.

The Metro has served our communities for the past 40 years and we have plans in place for it to serve our communities for the next 40 years. We will be introducing a new train fleet, rebuilding our depot and look at expanding our network across the region.

To do this we need to talk to engineers of the future, our participation at these kind events is very important as we can help guide and encourage pupils to consider a career in engineering.

We exhibited last year and found the whole experience really rewarding and a tremendous ‘shop window’ for Nexus and its engineering team. Our exhibit will be hands on, thought provoking and educational; we are very much looking forward to meeting and working with you all again.

What will they be exhibiting?

We will be bringing outdoor exhibits including our Road Rail Unimog and Ford Ranger vehicles.
